Join us for a fun-filled handwriting session designed to help your child with grasp skills and hand strength and endurance

Is your child holding his or her pencil correctly? Does your child need to improve fine motor strength and endurance? Does your child struggle with or avoid art and other fine motor tasks? Join us for a fun-filled class designed to help your child with grasp skills and hand strength and endurance. Your child will participate in games, obstacle courses, art, that incorporate using a mature, tripod grasp. Specific areas to be addressed are postural stability, upper extremity strength and endurance, manual dexterity, visual motor/perceptual skills, and of course grasp. They will use a variety of fun mediums to develop their grasp, including tongs, eye droppers, scissors, markers, crayons, and map pencils. If you are concerned about your young child’s grasp, it is best to correct it as soon as possible, as it is very difficult to correct when they get older.

Gross motor difficulties

Gross motor skills:

Gross motor (physical) skills are those which require whole body movement and which involve the large (core stabilising) muscles of the body to perform everyday functions. Gross motor skills are important to enable children to perform every day functions, such as walking, running, skipping, as well as playground skills (e.g. climbing) and sporting skills (e.g. catching, throwing and hitting a ball with a bat).

Children with difficulties in gross motor skills may demonstrate:

Low tone, poor posture,
Difficulties in hopping, skipping, jumping
Awkward movements, clumsy
Slower in completing activities than peers
Difficulty playing in playground
Difficulty catching throwing ball
Hand dominance and preference not definite

Fine motor skills

Fine motor skills involve the use of the smaller muscles of the hands to manipulate objects, such as when doing up buttons, opening lunch boxes or using pencils or scissors. Fine motor skill efficiency significantly influences the quality of the task outcome as well as the speed of task performance.

Children with difficulties in fine motor skills may demonstrate:

Immature pencil grasp
Illegible letters
Underdeveloped in hand manipulation skills like cutting, colouring
Eye hand coordination activities difficult like lacing, bead stringing

We use fun and playful activities to provide opportunities for kids to practice their fine motor skills such as, cutting with scissors, using cutlery, manipulating a zipper, shoe tying and even drawing skills. We will strengthen the palms and fingers, practice in-hand manipulation skills and increase our awareness to a correct body posture. Parents will be provided with practical tips to further improve their kids' skills at home.

Feeding Therapy

The SOS Approach to feeding assesses the “whole child” examining organ systems, muscles, sensory functioning, oral-motor skills, learning & behavior, cognition, nutrition, and environment, in order to discern underlying reasons for problematic feeding behaviors.

Feeding Therapy and the SOS Method

In keeping with our emphasis on your child, the OT uses the SOS Approach to feeding therapy, which assesses the "whole child" (including organ systems, muscles, sensory, oral-motor, learning/behavior, cognition, nutrition, and environment) in order to discern underlying reasons for problematic feeding behaviors.

A SOS (Sequential Oral Sensory) Approach to Feeding Therapy has proven to be a very effective program to improve success with feeding. Feeding problems can be perplexing for parents and caregivers of children who have difficulty with mealtimes and eating, which is often attributed to the relationship between weight gain and a child's experience with food.

The SOS Approach utilizes exploration and learning about the various properties of food, in order to facilitate enhanced level of comfort for the child in regards to his/her experience with foods. This takes place through allowing the child to interact with foods in a safe, play-based, stress-free manner. A "hierarchy" is introduced in order to build up the child's tolerance for exposure to foods, beginning with the ability to tolerate the food in the room and on the plate; then moving on to touching, tasting and eventually eating foods.

Social Skills Training for adolescents

Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS®) is a 16-week evidence-based social skills intervention for motivated adolescents in middle school or high school who are interested in learning ways to help them make and keep friends. During each group session adolescents are taught important social skills and are given the opportunity to practice these skills in session during socialization activities (e.g. playing sports, board games, etc.).

Parents are taught how to assist their teens in making and keeping friends by providing feedback through coaching during weekly socialization homework assignments.

How to use appropriate conversational skills
How to choose appropriate friends
How to appropriately use electronic forms of communication
How to appropriately use humor and assess humor feedback
How to start, enter and exit conversations between peers
How to organize successful get-togethers with friends
How to be a good sport when playing games/sports with friends
How to handle arguments and disagreements with friends and in relationships
How to handle rejection, teasing, bullying, rumors/gossip, and cyber bullying
How to change a bad reputation

Rehab for perceptual and cognitive skills

Perceptual and Cognitive skills help the child in understanding the relationship and configuration of objects and self in the environment and space. They also include visual skills which enable a child to understand the characteristics of objects like shape, size and structure so that they make proper judgement. These skills are relied more during the preschool and school years.

A child with perceptual and cognitive difficulties may demonstrate:

Poor body awareness: frequent falls, leaning, stooping over desk
Cannot find things or frequently loses things
Stumbles, bumps in to things
Cannot place picture puzzle, jig saws
Difficulty in copying from board
Frequent letter reversals as compared to peers
Difficulty reading from book
Difficulty copying from board
Difficulty forming letters
Difficulty in copying simple shapes
Difficulty constructing designs, playing construction games e.g. Lego

Our OT uses strategy training approach which focuses on the acquisition and application of strategies to process information more efficiently. While performing a task, children are taught cognitive strategies to perceive the nature of the task in the context of the environment, and are taught how to recognize the similarities between the present tasks and past experiences. The OT also focuses on goal formation and metacognitive aspects of cognitive training. We use fun games and activities to conduct cognitive rehabilitation in children.

Executive functioning

Executive functioning involves high-level cognitive skills that are required to pay attention, plan, execute, and organize daily routines and activities. It involves skills like organizing, planning, memory, time management, flexible thinking, multitasking, problem solving, analyzing, and strategy. When a child’s executive functioning skills are weak, any task from making a bed to completing a school project can become challenging.

Evaluations: What to Expect

When you call to set up an evaluation appointment, we’ll speak to you and ask you some questions about your child to get an initial picture of what your child is dealing with. We will set a date with you for an evaluation. An evaluation may run upto two hours and covers assessment of, gross motor, fine motor, handwriting and cognitive-perceptual and functional issues. After the evaluation, areas of concern are discussed and recommendations are made to help you get on the right path.

An evaluation does not include:
Recommendations of specific exercises to perform as treatment(This falls under therapy).
A treatment session immediately after the evaluation. Even if you decide to pursue therapy with us, we are unable to treat your child immediately. The evaluation stresses your child’s system to see how he will react and perform under all circumstances. He will be tired and it will not be an effective time for treatment.
